Proposal tips: choosing a diamond carat weight
14 July, 2016
Popping the big question is a huge and exciting move in one's relationship - but before you go ahead and ask that special someone to spend the rest of your lives together, you have the task of finding a ring that reflects your budget and bond with one another.
The last couple of weeks we have shared with you ideas on what diamond shape to choose (if you missed the posts you can read them here), this week we're going to delve into diamond carat weights.
The word "carat" comes from the "carob" seed, the original unit of measure for diamond traders; 1 carob = 1 carat. For those that are unsure, the carat is the weight of the diamond - the size of the carat you choose will most likely have a lot to do with the size of your engagement ring budget. It is not uncommon for men to find themselves slipping into debt with little knowledge about the diamond carat they have purchased however, this doesn't have to be the case. Here are some useful diamond carat tips that will help you when making your diamond purchase:
Diamond Carat Tips:
- One carat is equal to 0.2 grams, about the same weight as a paperclip
- A carat is divided into 100 points. For example, a 50-point diamond weighs 0.50 carats
- The majority of diamonds used in fine jewellery weigh one carat or less
- Precision is crucial as even a fraction of a carat can make a considerable difference in cost
- Diamond weights greater than one carat are expressed in carats and decimals. (For instance, a 1.08 ct. stone would be described as “one point oh eight carats,” or “one oh eight.”)
